Let\u2019s start with its origins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the technological innovations of the industrial revolution across Europe and the United States in the 18th and 19th centuries gave humankind the ability to produce items in mass quantities in various locales, society has operated primarily in a linear economy. That means we take natural resources, create goods and products, and once they\u2019re no longer of use, they head to the trash, and subsequently, the landfill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first few centuries, it appeared that all was well \u2014 until we realized that many of these products were either harmful to our health, not good for the environment, or like plastic, simply could not biodegrade. In 2018 alone, landfills received 27 million tons of plastic, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/facts-and-figures-about-materials-waste-and-recycling\/plastics-material-specific-data#:~:text=In%202018%2C%20landfills%20received%2027,percent%20of%20all%20MSW%20landfilled.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the Environmental Protection Agency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (EPA). The EPA also estimated that of the estimated 17 tons of new textiles generated in 2018, 11.3 tons of it ended up in the landfills. The documentary <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The True Cost<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/truecostmovie.com\/learn-more\/environmental-impact\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported that the average American generates 82 pounds of textile waste<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> each year. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/circular-economy\/what-is-the-circular-economy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ellen MacArthur Foundation stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that every second, the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or burned. The current linear economy model is no longer sustainable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s pretty straightforward \u2014 something needs to change. That\u2019s where circular fashion comes into play. In a circular economy, waste and pollution are designed out, turning the linear economy model into one that is circular. Instead of ending up in landfills, materials and products at the end of their use or lifespan to one owner continue to be cycled through. They are either recycled, or resold, giving the materials and products a second \u2014 and hopefully infinite \u2014 life span.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a circular economy can make significant changes: It can save $700 million in material costs annually in the consumer goods industry. IT can also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 48 percent by 2030.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what does a circular economy mean for the fashion industry? \u201cThe future of fashion is circular. It has to be,\u201d designer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpersbazaar.com\/uk\/fashion\/a27189370\/circular-fashion-definition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stella McCartney told Harper\u2019s Bazaar UK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In terms of fashion, it all starts with the design process. When conceptualizing a piece or a look, designers need to think about if the materials they are using are environmentally friendly and whether the item \u2014 an accessory, handbag, or garment \u2014 has a second lifespan. Will somebody else want to buy it after its current owner no longer has a use for it?
